we’ve seen a huge jump in the introduction of niched social networks recently. It will be interesting to see which ones take off, and which ones end up on the cutting room floor. I think the success of these sites will depend on the user-friendliness and aesthetics of their interfaces, how well the programmers build the back ends of the sites, and– maybe most important– the content that the early adopters bring to the sites in the early stages. Trendmill is a new site geared toward fashion trends– it looks pretty good. It caters to both industry and individuals, allowing brands to upload their designs to the site where individual members can vote on the designs and create buzz around pieces they like (and pieces they don’t like). Also, as the site continues into the future (assuming it does), you will be able to click on a trend timeline that will show you what was ‘hot and not’ at any point in time. I also like the editorial feature of the site– the posts are pretty entertaining. I’d be interested in hearing your thoughts about all of these new social networks– so leave a comment if you have some ideas to share.

Design - Information Design

Here are some good information design resources that may help into the recent information design subjects...

Blogs etc

Inspired by Manovich's definition of information aesthetics, this weblog explores the symbiotic relationship between creative design and the field of information visualization, in an emergent multidisciplinary field what could be coined as 'creative information visualization'.

This is a fantastic resource for Information Designers dealing with rich data analysis and a variety of treatments.

An interesting infographic trend: Square blocks of color are now being used to represent percentage-based statistics instead of the traditional pie chart. Some recent examples are shown here.

This is Signal vs. Noise, a weblog by 37signals about entrepreneurship, design, experience, simplicity, constraints, pop culture, our products, products we like, and more. Established 1999 in Chicago.

New Orleans based advertising firm Peter Mayer created this interactive data visualization site entitled Lives Connected to coincide with the end of hurricane season. It’s an interesting experiment, and ended up being quite the repository documenting the experiences of Hurricane Katrina and the people affected by it. The interface they built allows you to access 44 different peoples video-taped stories, and then connect each person by thematic association. For example Bill M. is connected to 8 others for saying he ‘feels fortunate’, while Sonya L. is connected to 12 others for talking about her pets. Fascinating to see the stories of survivors shared this way!

The Importance of User Experience

This was a fun diagram to work on. Frank Spillers, of Experience Dynamics saw my earlier Flickr diagrams and wanted to commission something similar with some general usability and user experience concepts.

The idea was to emphasize the readability and approachability of the subject matter (keep it fun!) and not overload the map with too many concepts. Hence, this piece: "The Importance of User Experience." (Used here with permission.)

The best part of this diagram, for me, was collaborating with Frank, who's an enthusiastic and dang bright guy.

Update!: Experience Dynamics has made this diagram available as a poster-size print, perfect for hanging in your office, cube or team-area. Visit their site for ordering information:

EGBG Counterscript | anti-telemarketing chart

Interesting idea of information design, well a process chart that brings the power into your hands...

Telemarketing seems rarer nowadays since there’s apparently a law against it. Still, you can beat these guys to the punch by using this hilarious counter-script against them. Now let’s see who drops the call first...

The Shape of Song is web-based software by New York-based digital artist Martin Wattenberg that has its own unique way of artistically interpreting MIDI files. You can load any MIDI song you can find on the Web into the interface (that's "Eleanor Rigby" by the Beatles pictured above), or pick one of the many songs already in the site's 648-piece repertoire, and it will visualize it for you by drawing translucent arches that correspond with various parts of the music.

Too bad you can't hear the music while it's doing the analyzing and drawing. Guess that will be coming in version 2.0. – Charlie White

Exploring the design of information and its impact on customer experience...

Why is this called ‘re-frame’?
Everyone has many frames of reference.

A frame of reference is the perspective from which something is observed, analysed and understood. People communicating with different frames of reference is the cause of many misunderstandings.

Understanding a person’s frame of reference is crucial to designing good experiences. The person whose frame of reference you need to understand could be:

a customer
a client
a friend
a colleague
anyone you interact with

Differing frames of reference also have a marked impact on customer experiences. For example:

Two people sit down and eat the same meal in the same restaurant at the same time. One person feels that he has had a great experience, the other feels that he has had a bad experience. How so?

They entered the experience (restaurant) with different frames of reference. The latter person frequently dines in high-end restaurants and perceived his meal to be poor relative to his past experiences. The former usually eats pre-packed meals and perceives his meal to be excellant relative to his past experiences.

How can different frames of reference affect your everyday experiences?

Ecouterism is a variant of voyeurism that involves listening rather than seeing.

You can use ecouterism in a sentence as follows:

1. “Overheard in New York” is addictive enough to turn anyone into an ecouterist.

2. If “Overheard in New York” turns you into an ecouterist, then OverPlot will turn you into a homosexual ecouterist.

World Usability Day
http://www.worldusabilityday.org/

World Usability Day fun continues. Here’s some more information about World Usability Day activities via an email from Clarissa Mattingly:

World Usability Day promotes the value of usability, user-centred design, and everyone’s desire for things that work better. This year, it will take place on Tuesday 14 November.

Over the course of 36 hours, events will be held around the globe. Last year, Sydney was among 70 cities in 30 countries which played host to free, public events. For each event, usability professionals dedicated a few hours of their time to get out the word that usability counts. Events included panel discussions, workshops, clinics, outdoor “scavenger hunts” and more. And the topics went beyond traditional web usability to cover product design, mobile devices, ergonomics and more.

There’s only 75 days to go, so make sure you get along to the planning day coming up on 1 September 2006. The planning day is all about getting things off the ground. Deciding what event will be, who will participate, where it will be held, and how it will be publicised. It’s crucial to the success of our event that it’s run by people from across our industry.

The informal get-together will be held at Different’s wharf-side offices in Pyrmont (see map)and starts at 4pm, Drinks and some delicious barbeque food will be available, as a small incentive for your participation!

If you would like to attend, please RSVP via clarissa.mattingly@different.com.au no later than COB Thursday 31 August 2006

And don’t forget to register your interest at the World Usability Day website!

Go on then. Get involved!

Pause

Today’s postings are being written in the very stylish surroundings of the Pause cafe, in the mean streets (well, 10-15 years ago) of Ikebukuro (my hood). Having opened just over a year ago, it acts as a true oasis in this definitely unhip section of the city, serving up a cool atmosphere, with truly unpretentious staff — I get greeted by name everytime I come in. The cafe also acts as the offices for Roughtoyz (and soon Laughtoys), with some of their vinyl creations on permanent display in a section wall that seperates the open office area from the rest of the space. It’s a definite highlight in my Ikebukuro life.

And if you happen by Ikebukuro on your next visit to the city, take a look at my previous ramen shop guide to the area.

Cafe Add+Ress

The appearance of a stylish new cafe in Ikebukuro is definitely something to write about, as my ‘hood isn’t really known for that sort of thing – exception made for my beloved Cafe Pause of course (full disclosure: I not only manage the gallery space there, but I also produce various events, including last night’s inaugural PauseTalk). So I was quite excited when some recent renovations on Parco’s 6th floor – Parco being a big youth-oriented shopping center inside the station – not only saw expanded Graniph and Smith (stationery) stores, but also the addition of Cafe Add+Ress. The interior is quite attractive, with comfortable seating, and it includes five net-ready iMac’s for couple surfing (at least that’s what the two chairs in front of every Mac suggested). The food and drink menu is quite extensive (with nice lunch plates), and I’ll vouch for the strawberry cheesecake parfait – it’s to die for.

Fashion - On the street

Fashion on the Street | Blogs and flickr etc...

interesting to see the styles happening around the world, what people are doing, wearing and influenced by different trends that often lead on to other design styles and disciplines...

Street style: Singapore

Singapore is the smallest country in Southeast Asia. The nation is technically an island city-state located on the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, south of the Malaysian state of Johor, and north of the Indonesian Riau Islands. But what Singapore lacks in space, it makes up for in style.

The Clothes Project is a website that tracks the best of Singapore's street styles. Young people in Singapore blend the avant-garde dressing of Japan with more traditional island colors and patterns. If you aren't so much interested in the clothes, you should take a look at the site just to see Singapore's alluring night cityscape. Think colored lights reflecting on water surrounded by groves of palm trees.

http://theclothesproject.blogspot.com/
Updates have been spotty for the past few weeks due to my tight schedule. However, this week has to be the first where I kept encountering well-dressed people who are terribly camera-shy as well.

We spent quite a bit of time browsing the runways from Fashion Week in New York, and we love to ogle photos of celebrities in the latest trends from high-end designers, but sometimes the best fashion inspiration comes from the average, yet stylish, person on the street. Wardrobe Remix is a photo pool over at photo-sharing site flickr that has over 1400 members who have uploaded more than 5000 photos of themselves in their stylish stuff. I wouldn't say that everything there is necessarily haute couture, but that is precisely the beauty of the photos -- these are everyday people who've put together great outfits right out of their closets.

http://www.styledash.com/search/?q=%22f … 3&y=11

About wardrobe_remix
this group was created by tricia royal. see here: www.bitsandbobbins.com
this group is moderated by "bitsandbobbins" and "just jenny".
***
i believe the best stylists walk the streets, not the photo sets, nor the backstage of the runways. the real innovators are you and me: real, fashionable people, men and women alike.
how do *you* put it together? where did you get that item of clothing from? is there a story behind something you wear? a reason why you wear specific styles or types of clothing, or a particular item all the time?

http://www.flickr.com/groups/wardrobe_remix/

Style on the streets: Helsinki

One of my favorite style sites to browse is Hel-Looks, which follows the street fashion of Finland's capital, Helsinki. The age range is huge (although mainly between 15 and 25) and the styles are daring and bold. The best way I can explain the style of Helsinki's trendy citizens is that it's a cross between gothic Lolita, Japanese street punk, and college art students. And although some are disturbingly stuck in the 80s, others demonstrate a great ability to fashionably layer and accessorize. Plus, this site has driven me to an obsession with scarves (which is really saying something 'cause I live in Florida)

http://www.hel-looks.com/

Style on the streets: Oslo
What do you know about Norway?

According to Wikipedia, Norway is officially known as the Kingdom of Norway. In Norwegian, that's Kongeriket Norge or Kongeriket Noreg. The country is located on the western portion of the Scandinavian Peninsula, bordering Sweden, Finland and Russia. Norway's extensive coastline along the North Atlantic Ocean is home to its famous fjords. (I love anything that starts with an 'fj'!)

Aside from the awesome fjords, Oslo – Norway's capital – has a vibrant street fashion life. If you're interested, there is a website called Oslotil, which posts daily snapshots of the hip, Northern European city's street-style. Eclectic dresses and wild accessories (think: over-sized sunglasses and trendy hats) seem to rule in this city. All in all, Oslo seems like a cross between Los Angeles casual and London bo-ho.
http://www.oslostil.blogspot.com/

Style on the streets: Toronto
On location: Toronto

When you say "Canadian Fashion" most people assume that you are talking about the international fashion hub, Vancouver. (Relax, Montreal, we know you're there. And if this was about you, we would have said "Quebecois Fashion.") Even though Vancouver is the reigning Canadian capital of runway shows and design houses, the truth is that Toronto has its own an unexpectedly vibrant street fashion culture. There's even a site dedicated to chronically the outfits of budding Canuck street fashionistas called Toronto Street Fashion.

For a city that spends half of the year beneath the ground in network of tunnels, the above-ground streets have a great deal of flair. Then again, I suppose the city needs to make up for January somehow – and that might as well be done by donning a pair of crazy green short-shorts in sunny July.

Here are some grabs from a recent article, via the cool hunter

TREND FIRMS USE BLOGS TO SEARCH FOR THE NEXT BIG THING
http://www.thecoolhunter.net/news/TREND … -BIG-THIS/

"They're definitely the current hot thing," says Paris photographer and blogger Yvan Rodic, who publishes daily photographs of Paris street fashion on his blog facehunter.blogspot.com.
http://facehunter.blogspot.com/

Reinier Evers is the founder of the Amsterdam-based website trendwatching.com. More than 130,000 business and marketing professionals in more than 120 countries subscribe to the site's free monthly newsletter. A network of more than 8000 spotters from more than 70 countries send in information in return for small gifts, such as key-ring cameras, but mostly just for the credibility that comes from spotting a trend.
http://www.trendwatching.com/

Mr Evers says innovation based on trend information is a hot topic. "We get virtually all of our 'big spottings' - consumer behaviour-changing ideas, concepts, big-picture thinking - from blogs written by smart business thinkers such as Jeff Jarvis buzzmachine.com and Seth Godin sethgodin.com," he says. http://www.sethgodin.com/sg

And the mainstream is listening to what bloggers have to say. Helen Lee, editor of Australian online fashion and beauty magazine sassybella.com, says blogs have changed the fashion scene as people can now get up-to-date information about fashion shows in Paris, Milan, New York and London almost as they happen. "With the popularity of broadband, people can get up-to-date video feeds as well," she says. "Blogs give a magazine-like commentary at the turnover time of newspapers. Whether they're news blogs or fashion commentary blogs, it all happens a lot faster and you can find out what the latest trend is in Copenhagen or Denver."
http://www.sassybella.com/

Cologne-based designer Markus Gogolin, who runs the blog designspotter.com, says he loves the influence the internet is having on society and trends. "As a designer, it is so easy to see what is happening on the planet.

"The band is notoriously reclusive, so much so that it is rumoured that their own record company does not have their phone numbers. Another notable example of their eccentric behavior was reported to Johnny Marr of The Smiths by Karl Bartos, who explained that anyone trying to contact the band for collaboration would be told the studio telephone did not have a ringer, as during recording the band did not like to hear any kind of noise pollution. Instead, callers were instructed to phone the studio at a certain time on the dot, whereupon the phone would be answered by Ralf Hütter, despite himself never hearing the phone ring. Hütter: "The telephone is an antiquity — you never know who is calling, there is no image, it is an outmoded product which constantly disrupts work." (interviewed in Liberation, 1991) "

Design - Hotel Room or Art Exhibit?

Copenhagen
Hotel Fox
What happens when 21 graffiti artists, graphic designers and illustrators get carte blanche to give a blah three-star hotel a radical makeover? Volkswagen staged this experiment to publicize its new VW Fox—and the result is Hotel Fox, Europe's grooviest new hotel, with 61 psychedelic roomscapes. California-based German illustrator Birgit Amadori placed life-size fairy tale-inspired figures in her King's Forest room, while Venezuelan mixed-media artist MASA created a tribute to the trees that surround his Caracas apartment building. Even check-in at the Fox is unorthodox: Guests are given a cooler bag filled with Champagne and chocolates (the "lovers" bag), beer and popcorn (the "movie" bag) or Bloody Mary makings and aspirin (the "hangover" bag). Still, it's not all gimmickry: The bathrooms are normal. Details: Doubles from $150; Jarmers Plads 3; 011-45-3395-7755 or http://www.hotelfox.dk
http://www.hotelfox.dk/rooms.html

Madrid
Hotel Puerta América
It would not be overstating the case to call Puerta América the most ambitiously designed hotel ever. No fewer than 19 of the world's hottest talents collaborated to create the interior of this 342-room, sunset-colored, wedge-shaped building—itself the work of French superstar architect Jean Nouvel. Rather than choose a deluxe or an executive suite, you choose your favorite designer. Is it Iraqi-British avant-gardist Zaha Hadid? Then stay in her curvaceous white room, with walls made of LG Hi-Macs (a malleable, Corianlike material). Maybe it's British minimalist supreme David Chipperfield? Then choose his room with the black terra-cotta tile floor and wall of white sheers. After check-in, have a cocktail in the Marc Newson-designed bar. Details: Doubles from $365; Av. América 41; 011-34-91-744-5400 or

San Francisco
Hotel des Arts
This modest 51-room hotel has been quietly distinguishing itself from its middle-of-the-road rivals by gradually covering its walls with art by emerging talent. Nothing is framed, though. The artists range from techno-punk mavericks to stars on the verge. Brian Ermanski's room, a riot of black, white, fuchsia and turquoise, is so dense with text you'll be up all night reading; Anthony Skirvin's is an unsettling conceptual installation, a hideout full of personal effects that look like they could have been left behind by the Unibomber; David DeRosa's has a color-saturated portrait that hovers over the bed. Details: "Painted rooms" from $119 for a double (to reserve one, call the hotel instead of booking online); 447 Bush St.; 800-956-4322 or

Boquitas Pintadas, Buenos Aires Six bedrooms in this "Art Supermarket/Hotel" contain installations, graffiti and video art, all for sale. Once the pieces are sold, new artists redo the rooms. Details: Doubles from $135; Estados Unidos 1393; 011-54-11-4381-6064 or
http://www.boquitas-pintadas.com.ar

Hôtel du Petit Moulin, Paris Christian Lacroix's batty, hyper-ornate fashions have been translated into interiors at this new Le Marais hotel. Details: Doubles from $220; 29/31 rue du Poitou; 011-33-1-4274-1010 or http://www.paris-hotel-petitmoulin.com

Lute Suites, Amsterdam Seven 18th-century houses along the Amstel River, just outside the city in Ouderkerk aan de Amstel, were fitted out by star local designer Marcel Wanders. Details: Doubles from $360; Amsteldijk Zuid 54-58; 011- 31-20-4722-462 or

I'm calling them "haute-tels" because they are luxury resort hotels that are being built by fashion designers.

Back in 2004, when Bulgari teamed up with Marriott/Ritz Carlton, there was no connection between fashion and travel, except for designers and models shacking up in fancy hotels on their glamorous globe-trots. But today, everyone from Betsey Johnson to Vera Wang is getting into the hotel and hospitality world. However, according to Forbes, industry analysts are skeptical because not only is the hospitality industry notoriously difficult (as if fashion weren't - pshaw!), but diluting a specialty luxury brand is risky. Designers, though seem to want exactly that - expanding their specialty reputation in shoes or leather or ballgowns into a "lifestyle brand."

Here are Forbes picks ten designer hotels:

Anouska Hempel has four hotels around the globe: Blakes London, Blakes Amsterdam, The Hempel (London) and Warapuru (Brazil). www.anouskahempeldesign.com

Betsey Johnson's Betseyville is on the Pacific coast of Mexico. www.betseyville.com

Bulgari Hotels and Resorts are currently in Milan and Bali, with more to open. www.bulgarihotels.com

Casual footwear maker Camper has a hotel in Barcelona, Spain near their headquarters. www.camper.es

Salvatore Ferregamo has teamed up with luxury hotelier Lungarno Hotels, with the newest property opened above a Ferragamo boutique in Rome. www.lungarnohotels.com

In the playground for billionaires, Dubai developer EMAAR has invested $1 billion in Girogio Armani's Armani Hotels, the first of which will open in Dubai in 2008. www.emaar.com

NEW MAJESTIC HOTEL - Singapore

http://www.newmajestichotel.com/

Singapore is the latest city to unveil a new themed room hotel, putting the 'b' into boutique as it's never been before. The new generation design hotel is all about individuality and intimacy - the anti hotel if you will - more Hollywood mansion than mega hotel chain.

Singapore's fabulous New Majestic Hotel fits the bill, with 30 unique rooms designed by prominent artists and designers. Showcasing a mix of vintage and new furniture, the rooms adhere to different themes from the 'Hanging Bed Room' where murals span whole walls through to the incredible Aquarium Room where a glass-encased bathtub sits in the middle of the room.

The Grand old lady (Majestic hotel @ Chinatown) reopen after an estimate $3 million Extreme makeover.
There is a special 10m long pool and all the room are specially design according to their location in the Hotel.
The room are theme in the following:
(1) Da Jie room : Inspired by Power Puff girl & Charlie Angel's; there is a potrait of a lady at the head of the bed.
(2) The Pussy Parlour : Inspired by Pop Art, Fashion Show sets and MAC cosmetic campaigns; had a nice springy bed with 4 post around the 4 corner.
(3) Fluid room : This room had a sleek and sexy ambience; which is design by the famous designer-Wykidd Song & his friend (Greg Elliot).
(5) There is this room that had no window, but it had ceiling mirrors that create a special effect on light within, that would brighten up the room.
(6) Weeds room : As the name suggest, there are weeds that grow out from anywhere, even from cracks in the walls.
Well, the rate are from S$280 to S$600 a night. Location is at bukit Pasoh Road (nickname Mistress Street), which is about 100m from outram park MRT station Exit. The new owner (owner of hotel1929) had bought over the 4 storey Hotel and configured it from a 56 rundown rooms into 30 rooms with a hip design sense but still have a hint of the grand old lady Glory day with the quirkily stylish lobby (the ceiling).
Hope this is good news to anyone who are looking for a unique place to stay in Singapore.

Design - Kozyndan

Mobile phone art... desktops

kozyndan is actually the Los Angeles based husband and wife team, Kozy and Dan Kitchens. Their minds and bodies melded in a freakish cell phone accident in 2001 and they have been creating artwork together ever since. Using pencil, paint, computers and whatever other means they deem necessary, they create humorous works of art and illustrations that reflect love affair with, and unease within, the modern urban world and it's technology.

-------------->

If you’re unfamiliar with Kozyndan, aka Kozy and Dan, they’re an awesomely talented illustration star duo out of LA, California. They just updated their site with a handful of new Panorama drawings– and words can not describe how sick they are. Click through to the site to see this Tokyo Panorama in full size. From their site: The complexity of the average street corner in Tokyo is astounding. kozy’s ability to sit and concentrate on these myriad details is even more astounding. I asked to have myself laid onto the street so I could be promptly run over - kozy had no problem what so ever accommodating that request. Plus there are 2 naked business men in the Illustration, though one of them can only be seen on a full size print of the image. Most of the prints are available as plain old prints, archival prints and offset prints. They sell out quickly, and are very limited edition.

Kozyndan Documentary

Part of the Baltic Center's current "Spank the Monkey" show, Playstation commissioned a documentary about the husband-and-wife artists known as Kozyndan. Shot in HD, the 20 minute piece has interviews with Giant Robot founding editor Eric Nakamura, one of their collectors, Oliver Luckett, sixspace gallerist Caryn Coleman and friends of the duo, who all chime in to help describe their epic panoramas and their relationship. The result is a candid portrait that tells the story of how the young LA-based couple went from students at a local public college to exhibiting internationally. You can watch or download it here.

The graffiti equivalent of the super heroes’ Justice League of America, the group show “Spank the Monkey,” opens today, Wednesday, 27 September 2006, at The Baltic Center for Contemporary Art in Gateshead, England. Featuring some of CH’s favorite artists, including Chiho Aoshima, Dzine, Faile, Shepard Fairey, Banksy, Freaks Gallery, Os Gemeos, Groovisions, Invader, Barry McGee, Ryan McGinness, Takashi Murakami, David Shrigley, Swoon, Ed Templeton, and Miss Van, some of the all-stars have made installations in the gallery and some have done some planned public interventions throughout the area. But locals should be on the lookout for some extra-curricular art—now that the show is up, there's sure to be a lot of bombing before the artists leave.

You’re shopping in the Harajuku district and you already have your backpack filled to the brim with cellphone straps, dvd’s, figures from all the vending machine you just can’t avoid and a couple of new games. Then, when you think it’s been a great day and decide to go to a McDonald’s for a quick Teriyaki burger, you pass a little shopwindow displaying Star Wars figures like you’ve never seen before. They remind you of Lego and Playmobil, but these are way cooler..

Few Many has a show in Tokyo called "TOY2R EXPO" (Toys Save Children). Half the profits will be donated directly to the UNICEF. This is really the most interesting collection of 'designer' toys I've ever seen-- with literally dozens to choose from. All the toys are originals and are for sale online through PayPal. If you're a hardcore toy collector, you should be all over this-- there are some really great designs. The show starts Monday October 10th and runs through Sunday the 16th.

Tokidoki
Italian illustrator Simone Legno. His world and creations for a concept he calls ‘tokidoki’ (Japanese for ’sometimes’) are visually arresting. Color, whimsy, anime, wonder, sex–it’s all a part of Legno’s philosophy. He says he chose the name because:

‘Everyone waits for moments that change one’s destiny. By simple chance or meeting a new person, tokidoki is the hope, the hidden energy everyone has inside that gives us the strength to face a new day and dream something positive, that something magical will happen to us.’

If you haven’t seen any of Legno’s work previously, that’s about to change. His images are currently being licensed for everything from handbags to iPod cases.

Pee and Poo: The Unflushables

I know some of you wouldn’t as much as entertain the idea of buying someone the gift of Pee and Poo; I however, wouldn’t think twice– especially after the amazing feedback I got from people the other night when I brought Pee and Poo as a gift to a charity toy drive as part of the Fox Theater’s Christmas party. I kept a vigilant eye on Pee and Poo in the toy bin, and it was amusing — to say the least — to see peoples’ reactions when they went to drop the standard board game or Barbie off at the bin. Pee and Poo were so popular in fact, that they remained on the very top of the pile throughout the night, displayed prominently, with a circle of ‘fans’ huddling around them. True, drunk adults have an affinity for dirty humor, but I would even buy these guys for a child. I did, after all, grow up reading books like ‘Everyone Poops,‘ by Taro Gomi. Didn’t you all? Either way, I take my hat off to Swedish designer Emma Megitt for having such a healthy sense of humor.

Our good friends at Joy Engine (Boulder’s buzziest boutique and art gallery)have been running high on zing and low on zzz’s as they put the final touches on freshest addition to the family: an online extension of the store that will share the store’s designer toys, men’s and women’s clothing, and original artwork with parts of the planet not lucky enough to actually walk into the magic that is Joy Engine. So far, a decent selection of their merchandise is represented online, with artwork from favorites like Jason Thielke and Shannon Bonatakis, tons of toys, and some of Joy’s own “most raddest” clothing designs. The severely talented artists/designers that keep the Engine purring like a kitty are always working hard on new designs, so as the weeks go by keep an eye out for the latest– things come in limited quantities over there, and the good stuff never lasts long.

Our friends over the pond at FUSShop have released their new Saviour T-shirt designs for Summer 07, and amongst the new lineup is this, the famous U.K. graffiti artist Banksy in his infamous disguise. The close up shots of the T’s reveal their worn and comfy feel, and you have to love what they’ve done with an icon here– celebrating the guy who single handedly raised property values in London’s trendy Shoreditch area with his stencils and spray can. While everything in Banksy’s personal shop is free, this T is going to cost you a pretty penny once you convert 29.99 Pounds Sterling to U.S. D’s, but for you hard core Banksy fans out there, I’d say it’s well worth the cost. BTW– it also comes in kelly green.

Fonts - Helvetica sites + the film...

Helvetica is a full-length independent documentary film that investigates the deeper and more subtle ways in which type affects our daily lives. Using the now ubiquitous font helvetica as the thematic centerpiece, the film explores urban spaces with regards to the fonts that inhabit them, and also engages in discussions with world renowned designers about the aesthetics and rationale behind their choices of type. Helvetica was filmed in the United States, England, the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, France and Belgium. Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait until 2007, at which time it will start screening at various film festivals around the world. For now, you can check out the online store and purchase a limited edition (100 pieces) print for the film or a t-shirt with the movie logo screened on the front.

We're all up ons Helvetica -- how could you possibly not be? MoMA's decided to celebrate the 50th anniversary Max Miedinger and Edouard Hoffmann's illustrious typeface with an installation of posters, signage, and other items that show off this loved-by-all modern classic. The exhibition will also include an excerpt from Gary Hustwit's documentary "Helvetica," which we previously covered here.

There are several thousand other fonts out there. Why use this old Swiss one (that almost everyone else uses)?

From 'Helvetica: Homage to a Typeface':

"I remember a time at Yale when my work was being critiqued by Paul Rand. Mr Rand told me only to use Helvetica as a display face, never in text. Then he squinted, leaned in, and whispered in my ear, "because Helvetica looks like dogshit in text"."
- Kyle Cooper

“Helvetica is like a good screwdriver; a reliable, efficient, easy-to-use tool. But put in the wrong hands and it’s potentially lethal.”
- Tom Geismar

So this is the book that sings the praises of Helvetica, in fact I think it looks ok...
http://youworkforthem.com/product.php?sku=P0049

Title: Helvetica: Homage to a typeface

Details: This book sings the praises of the shift worker and solo entertainer of typefaces, of its forgotten creator Max Miedinger and all those who have contributed to its unparalleled international march of triumph over the past forty years. The designs gathered together here in honour of Helvetica have been created by superb designers and anonymous amateurs from all over the world. This book follows the usage of Helvetica from creation to current day status.

Helvetica is not only the preferred typeface of leading professionals, it is also an all-time favorite among the multitude of codes and signals and commands that enliven urban life. Helvetica is the perfume of the city.

Dimensions: 4.9"x6.5" (inches)
Pages: 256
Edition: Hardcover
Languages: English

Description: Max Miedinger could never have known what he created. Helvetica has been the leading typeface of its time and has a cult following. This book follows major design works that use Helvetica to communicate. French folds with perforated pages....

Well I like Helvetica, I admit it, I like Swiss better but Helvetica has a certain charm, and used in the right way, and I think this quote fits the use of Helvetica
"A man's got to know his limitations", and Dirty Harry was right in respect with Helvetica....

Fonts - Web 2.0

Check out this article, a nice mix of styles and the typefaces used, it's great to see the styles and faces that influence them...

Deconstructing the typefaces used for popular Web 2.0 brand names.

The Logos of Web 2.0
http://www.fontshop.com/fontfeed/archiv … -logos.cfm

There is no official standard for what makes something “Web 2.0”, but there certainly are a few tell-tale signs. These new sites usually feature modern web technologies like Ajax and often have something to do with building online communities. But even more characteristic among these brands is their appearance. Web 2.0 sites nearly always feel open and friendly and often use small chunks of large type. The colors are bright and cheery — lots of blue, orange, and what we jokingly call the Official Color of Web 2.0: lime green.

You can see some of these striking commonalities in Ludwig Gatzke’s compilation of nearly 400 Web 2.0 logos. Read on for a breakdown of the fonts used in a few of our favorite brands.
